UMass Lowell Continuing Studies, Corporate & Distance Education

Proctored Exams Guidelines

Students who are enrolled in distance learning courses and live within a 60 mile radius of UMass Lowell are required to come to campus to take proctored exams. Students who live beyond the 60 miles radius of UMass Lowell must identify a proctor and make appropriate arrangements with their instructors. It is the responsibility of the UMass Lowell student to identify an appropriate proctor and confirm arrangements regarding the scheduling and administration of the exam directly with the proctor. The following proctor information must be provided and emailed to Sarah Beaulieu, Continuing Studies' Coordinator of Proctored Exams at proctor@uml.edu 2-3 weeks before the proctored exam:

  1. Name
  2. Title
  3. Company/Agency/Educational Institution
  4. Address
  5. Phone Number
  6. Fax Number
  7. Email address
  8. The proctor must meet the Continuing Education office staff approval.

In addition to the testing materials, a copy of the Academic Integrity Policy will be included. Both the student and the proctor must review, sign and return the policy with examination and a copy of a photo ID. Any violation of the this policy is subject to disciplinary action on the part of the University.

Who can be approved to serve as a proctor?
An acceptable proctor is someone with no conflict of interest in upholding UMASS Lowell's Academic Integrity Policy. Relatives, friends, spouses, neighbors, and co-workers are not acceptable proctors. Your proctor candidate may be one of the following:

  • Librarian at a public library
  • An employee at a learning center
  • An officer of higher rank than the student, if in the military
  • An employee at a college, university, or private testing center (in this case, the testing center director should be listed as your proctor)
  • Direct supervisor at the place of employment, providing the setting is suitable for academic testing.
