Course Description Introduction to the fundamental postulates of quantum theory: Planck's quantization hypothesis; wave-particle duality; time-dependent & time-independent Schrodinger's Equation; simple quantum mechanical systems. Radiation and quanta; quantization of the radiation field and cavity modes; absorption and emission of radiation; coherence functions; coherent states; importance of quantum fluctuations and quantum nature of light; laser amplifiers and amplifier nonlinearity; electromagnetics and quantum theory of laser oscillators; photons in semiconductors; semiconductor photon sources and detectors.
